What to expect? When you don't know what to expect!!

Updated: Jan 2, 2019

So you just got your brand new lash extensions, they are silky, long, you dont know what kind of wizardry your lady used to apply them and you have no idea how long they'll last and how you're meant to look after them! I get it, we've all been there at one point or another and theres so much information out there it's hard to know what to believe! So I'm here to set the record straight on what to expect from your lash extension and how to look after them.

1. They will fall out

I have a lot of clients message me asking if they are still meant to be stuck to the natural lash when they fall out and the answer is YES YES YES. This is a good thing in most cases, it means the lash extensions has grown out with your natural lashes cycle and means you've gotten a perfectly adhered set of lashes. Our natural lash cycle is between 30-45 days and we can expect to lose 2-5 per eye per day! So if you notice more lashes falling out, it's usually only because they are much darker and longer and naturally you're going to notice them more.

2. Will they ruin my eyelashes?

No. When applied correctly lash extensions do not ruin your eyelashes. Women can wear lash extensions consecutively for years with no damage at all if the eyelash extensions are applied correctly. To ensure you don't end up in a predicament where your eyelashes are damaged ensure the lash professional you choose is certified and practices correct isolation techniques. Easy ways to identify poor lash extensions are by looking through photos and reviews before choosing a lash artist.

3. My eyes are bloodshot!

This can happen in some cases due to two different components of the application

- The gel pads

- Glue fumes

It does clear within 24 hours, but to avoid this if you are feeling that the under-eye pads are stinging or irritating your eye during application or that your eyes are flickering and opening alert your lash professional straight away. Another way to avoid glue fumes is to keep your eyes closed until you are sitting upright and then open.

4. Can I get my lashes wet?

For the first 24-48 hours avoid water at all costs. This gives your lash extensions time to cure. After this yes, and in fact washing your lash extensions with a lash cleanser ensures your lash extensions last longer and you don't contract any hygiene related eye problems.

5. How permanent are lash extensions.

Lash extensions are adhered to the natural lash, not the skin. Due to this they can only last as long as that eyelash stays put in your head. Once it falls out so does the lash extension. As we said above the natural lash cycle is between 30-45 days, and this means you will need a refill every 3-4 weeks.

6. What makeup and makeup removers can I use?

In it's simplest form, oil is thy enemy. Avoid it at all costs! Usual enemies of lash extensions are concealers, mascaras, oily eye makeup removers and oil based illuminators. Companies are increasingly bringing lash extension safe makeup removers and cleansers to the market and Nivea are leading the way! So when in doubt look for extension safe products.
